Deliberate attacks and accidental explosions have highlighted the need for more research in the structural response of materials to blast loading. Currently there is a limited amount of experimental test data available on the response of structural elements exposed to blast loads, especially on wood. The Canadian Standard Association (CSA) is currently developing a document to address load and performance criteria for buildings under blast loading (CSA S850). Wood is included in the standard as a material option, however, information on the behaviour of wood under blast loading is lacking. Outcomes from research under the Discovery Grant program will translate into specific design requirements in the CSA S850 standard as well as in the timber design standard (CSA O86). The objective for the proposed research program is to reduce the hazards associated with extreme loads on wood structures through developing capacity relationships for critical structural members to evaluate damage under a given blast event and determine residual load-bearing capacity for the purpose of progressive collapse analysis. The experimental component of the research will be conducted in the newly established Shock Tube lab at the University of Ottawa, which is a unique facility in Canada, and it will allow the applicant the great opportunity to conduct world-class research in an area in which knowledge is much needed. Experimental work using the shock tube will form the core of the proposed research program, and it will provide a unique opportunity for students to gain experience in a state-of-the-art facility and gain experience in a topic that has not been well studied. All HQP will conduct experimental research as well as analytical work. The goal is to ensure that upon graduation, each student could function professionally in an academic or industrial setting. This timely research will allow students to pursue careers as researchers, and blast consulting engineers for government and nongovernment agencies. Furthermore, their experience in blast loading, performance and modelling will make them highly attractive to structural engineering firms.
