Multi-layer High Performance Composite (HPC) coatings are a potential solution for protecting oil/gas pipelines in extreme environments and are currently being tested in technology demonstration projects in the Arctic region. The long term performance of this protective coating is dependent upon both the coating-steel interfacial characteristics and the coating's through-thickness strength and integrity. Pre-qualification testing of HPC coatings with current standard Peel and Pull-Off tests has proven to be difficult because these tests are developed to characterize single-layer coatings.
