A driver can spend over 20 minutes on average to find and pay for a parking spot in a crowded city. Drivers looking for parking account for 30% of downtown traffic, contributing significantly to congestion. To date, drivers in the majority of Canadian cities have little or no information about vacant parking spots. ChipTag® has developed the ETR/EzPass system for parking, allowing users to pay automatically for parking in indoor gated lots based on entrance and exit times. The NSERC Engage funding will initiate a new collaboration that will enable us to develop a Seamless Intelligent Parking System (SIPS) that will enhance ETR/EzPass to provide: i) outdoor use; ii) comprehensive seamless parking payment; iii) comprehensive access control; iv) automatic authorized vehicle detection; and, v) real-time parking availability with pricing for drivers.
