Bacteria are small single cell organisms. Most bacteria are harmless and contribute to normal functioning of the body. Infectious bacteria on the other hand (for example, Staphylococcus aureus) can cause illness, which can be severe if left untreated. Bacterial infections can be treated with antibiotics however, with their increased use, bacteria have developed strategies to evade death by antibiotics, called drug resistance. New types of antibiotics are needed to combat these drug-resistant bacteria.
