Permafrost underlies about half of Canada's landmass and is a critical component of Canada. Roads and other transportation infrastructure are of vital economic, social, and political importance in Canadian permafrost regions. The stability of road foundation systems in many Canadian northern communities relies on the strength of the underlying permafrost. However, extensive evidence exists of permafrost warming and degradation (thawing) over the past decades because of the climatic warming. This degradation has been severely affecting the performance of many roads constructed in northern Canada, increasing their maintenance costs, decreasing their useful life span, and jeopardizing the population safety and economic activities in the North. This vulnerability to permafrost degradation has increased the concern of governmental agencies
