This application requests funds to upgrade a single-crystal X-ray diffractometer purchased in 2003. The addition of a new molybdenum (Mo) source and repairs to the CCD detector by the manufacturer will accomplish the following: (i) expand the types of crystals that can be examined by this instrument, because the beam is much more intense in the new Mo source, (ii) reduce the amount of down time due to repairs, which will increase the number of single crystals that can be examined. At present, as a result of this instrument's downtime, the queue of crystals awaiting analysis has grown, resulting in unacceptable slowdowns and delays in research progress of more than 20 research groups in British Columbia. This upgrade will restore this instrument to full capacity at a fraction of the cost of a new system.
