Calibration of atmospheric remote sensing instrumentation

We develop new instrumentation for atmospheric remote sensing of critical parameters including water vapour, ozone and aerosol distributions in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere, which is a region of the atmosphere that is critically coupled to the surface temperature. This instrumentation, which is intended for ultimate use on satellite platforms, is tested on aircraft and stratospheric balloons. The proposed equipment, which includes a thermal vacuum chamber, will provide us with in-lab capability of testing how these instruments perform in the harsh environments of space and the upper atmosphere, and a uniform source integrating sphere for a precise and robust method of calibrating the measurements. The Canadian Space Agency is considering the instrumentation that we are developing for potential future satellite missions and this university level research involvement provides an excellent opportunity to engage in training personnel for the future.
