Lower extremity powered exoskeletons are emerging as a viable technology that enables people with spinal cord injuries to walk and interact with their chosen environment in an upright position. These devices are self-supporting walking frames with powered hip, knee, and/or ankle movement that create motion and resist limb collapse. Bionik Laboratories Inc. has developed a novel Canadian exoskeleton (ARKE) that will provide a cost effective and highly functional device for people with spinal cord injuries or lower extremity weakness. This study will use new quantitative virtual reality technology and clinical rehabilitation evaluations to explore Exolegs function and advance this technology so that it can be used in subsequent clinical evaluation trials for people with mobility disabilities and be used as a physical rehabilitation tool.
