Contango Strategies is a Canadian leader in water treatment solutions. One of their main activities is to develop new, sustainable water treatment approaches for the mining, oil and gas sectors. A major part of their work involves implementing new approaches to reduce the toxicity of the tailings generated from oil sands petroleum extraction, stored in tailings ponds, also known as oilsands process waters (OSPW). Napthenic acids are believed to be the most significant environmental contaminants in OSPW. Contango is working on strategies for the biodegradation of these toxic compounds. The problem they wish to address with this research proposal, is a lack of data regarding the nature of the toxicity of napthenic acids, and, potentially the breakdown products produced through their treatments.
