The overall long-term goal of this research program is to develop efficient and cost-effective waste treatment/utilization systems for the bio-resource industry. The core components consist of biological treatment processes, the Microwave Enhanced Advanced Oxidation Process (MW-AOP), and a nutrient recovery process; each component can be used alone, or be integrated into a total treatment/utilization system. The short term goals are summarized as follows: 1). Microwave Enhanced Advanced Oxidation Process (MW-AOP): The objectives include: a) to study the effects of major factors, such as power intensity, hydrogen peroxide dosages, flow rate and temperature, on the continuous mode of operation of the MW-AOP; b) to investigate the athermal effects and reaction mechanism of the MW-AOP; c) to explore the possible superheating effects on nutrients release; and d) to develop a process prediction model. 2) Nutrient Recovery by Crystallization: The objectives will include: a) to establish the optimal pretreatment condition for dairy manure to produce suitable feed substrate to facilitate nutrient recovery; b) to study the effects of major factors, such as pH, hydraulic turbulence and flow velocity, in order to optimize the operating conditions for efficient struvite recovery; c) to develop a new and more efficient crystallizer design; and d) to explore the production and use of other possible crystallization products, such as potassium magnesium phosphate (KMP, or K-struvite) and/or calcium phosphate. 3) Biological Treatment Processes: The objectives are: a) to develop a flexible treatment system by combining an aerobic sequencing batch reactor (SBR) with real-time control and a fixed-film anaerobic digester suitable for small sized operations; b) to further develop the process control algorithms; and c) to integrate the biological treatment components to the MW-AOP and nutrient recovery components to establish the appropriate process flow sequence.
