Wireless communication has revolutionized our modes of communications, information retrieval and distribution, entertainment and social interaction. The number of cellular telephone subscribers worldwide currently exceeds five billion and industry revenues are in the one trillion dollars range. While a significant fraction of the current demand for wireless services remains voice-centric, rapid traffic growth in the coming years will be driven by mobile data and multimedia applications such as mobile web-browsing, movie streaming, multi-player online e-games, social media, real-time context-aware services and telemedicine. The design and operation of networks to support such a wide range of multimedia traffic and applications, each with its own Quality of Service (QoS) requirements, in a reliable and resource-efficient manner, present a daunting challenge. In the future, wireless cellular communication networks will need to support much higher user data rates and provide a high-quality user experience at an affordable price. This research program will investigate innovative approaches, models and techniques to make feasible this necessity. It will focus on three key areas: (1) Radio resource scheduling which aims to allocate scarce time and frequency resources to users in an efficient way. (2) Intercell interference coordination (ICIC) which refers to means for reducing the deleterious effects of intercell interference, a problem which can severely affect users near the cell edges and (3) Cooperative relaying which is a cost-effective technique for improving coverage, system capacity and handset battery lifetime. Results from the research program can potentially have a major positive impact on equipment manufacturers, service providers and cellular subscribers.
