Cognitive Radio (CR) is an emerging technology capable of solving spectrum scarcity that faces spectrum regulation agencies worldwide. CR aims at improving resource utilization efficiency as well as enhancing the communication reliability. These goals are achieved through allowing secondary access by CRs to licensed spectrum bands in an opportunistic manner such that licensed users (also known as Primary Users (PU)) experience no harmful interference. Multiband cognitive radio (MBCR) has the inherent capabilities of detecting and classifying a group of spectrum bands, allowing the CR to exploit every available chance to enhance communication reliability as well as improving the spectrum utilization efficiency. This research program will investigate innovative techniques and algorithms for simultaneous detection and utilization of a group of idle spectrum bands, hence providing the CR with additional degrees of freedom (compared to the classical Single Band Cognitive Radio (SBCR)). The main goal of this program is to address the challenges facing the realization of MBCR and establish a framework for efficient design of MBCR over cooperative relay networks. I will investigate new MBCR schemes in the context of cooperative relay networks and provide an in-depth analysis for their performance both analytically and by simulation. Adaptive modulation will also be explored as an additional powerful tool for enhancing power and spectral efficiency in MBCR relay networks. My research program will contribute to the global effort of developing techniques and tools for CR systems. The outcomes of this program will consist of novel algorithms and techniques and will include patents and publications. I will train 3 PhD and 3 MSc students in addition to 5 undergraduate students in the area of wireless communications. There is a strong demand for these HQP in the information technology and telecommunications sectors and their future employment will accelerate disseminating next-generation communications technology to Canadian industry and enhance Canada's leadership role in these sectors.
