Today's computer chips are required to be smaller, run faster, and use less power than ever before. Every circuit begins as a mathematical function describing the behaviour to take place, and in the synthesis from function to circuit a variety of parameters must be minimized, such as the number of gates, the number of levels, and the numbers of inputs and outputs. The process must also be done quickly and efficiently, as well as generating a result that is appropriate for the final intended technology and that is feasible for implementation. This research concerns synthesis for switching functions that are intended for implementation in both traditional and up-and-coming technologies. In traditional technologies the research will aim to achieve optimal circuits through analysis and categorization using a novel approach, namely the application of the autocorrelation transform. In addition I am working in the area of synthesis for reversible technologies, which while related to traditional Boolean logic synthesis, requires additional specific considerations and approaches. Reversible computing is related to quantum computing, which has a great deal of future potential in solving very difficult problems. In addition, reversible circuits by definition cannot create or lose any information, and thus will be far more power efficient. Techniques to synthesize reversible circuits are very new, and the proposed research is aimed at developing effective and efficient synthesis methods in this area as well.
