项目摘要

Disk structures are ubiquitous within the observable universe. Galaxies produce new stars in the spiral arms of their disks, planets form through the disk-like material left over from star formation, and black holes are associated with disks. Disks are also found around young and old stars as well as in binary systems. Currently, my research focuses on disk material associated with massive stars in order to understand the process of disk formation and the influence that these systems have on their surroundings. Massive stars are an important source of both winds and ionizing radiation that affect their immediate environment as well as shape the evolution of their parent galaxy. I use detailed computer models to predict observables such as spectral lines, polarization, and spectral energy distributions for comparison with observational data from many different sources including interferometers, satellites and ground-based observatories over a wide range of wavelengths. These detailed comparisons place tight constraints on model input parameters and allow the physical conditions in the star/disk system to be determined. Ultimately, my findings regarding disks surrounding massive stars may be extended to further our understanding of other disk-like distributions. My use of new observational technologies, especially high-resolution interferometry, combined with increased computer capabilities and data storage, will allow me to make significant progress in expanding our knowledge of these disk-like regions.
