Today's internet data centers (IDCs) are achieving significant advances in communication and computation capabilities. As the demand on Internet services drastically increases in recent years, the energy used by Internet data centers (IDCs) has been skyrocketing. How to conduct efficient and green power management for Internet data centers is becoming a top concern faced by data center operators including government organizations, financial firms, hospitals, as well as major IT companies. In this project, we will investigate this important and challenging problem. Specifically, we will study three topics: (A) Holistic power management integrating micro-level power-efficient designs and macro-level resource management services; (B) Intelligent interaction and coordination of data centers and smart grids; (C) Data center powered up by renewable wind energy. We will propose new integrated framework, novel models and analysis techniques, and adaptive strategies and algorithms to support the efficient and green power management for IDCS. We will draw upon theories and technical advances in several disciplines including power-efficient designs, capacity planning, economic modeling, optimization and control, and distributed processing to design intelligent strategies to carry out efficient power management. Potential impacts of this research can be summarized as follows. First, we will provide a comprehensive engineering framework and its associated analytic foundations for the efficient and green power management of IDCs. Research findings from this project could have great economic and environmental impacts due to the significantly reduced energy consumptions. Second, by publications through scientific journals and dissemination of results on the Internet, we will make our research experiences and results available to a broad scientific community, to stimulate new applications and creative discoveries in data center power management. Finally, we are also committed to integrating cutting-edge research with teaching and outreach programs, giving hands-on experiences to the students.
