MRS for subatomic physics at the University of Victoria

This grant request is for the continued salary support of two highly-skilled individuals based at the University of Victoria who are an essential resource for subatomic physics and accelerator physics projects in Canada. The detector technologist and electronics technologist have made crucial contributions to flagship Canadian subatomic and accelerator physics projects, and their expertise is needed to maintain existing detector systems and to help develop new systems, in collaboration with subatomic physicists across Canada. Research programs that have benefitted from these individuals include ATLAS, T2K, SuperB, ALTAIR/STARCaL, International Linear Collider, and ARIEL. The MRS at UVic leverages resource investments from TRIUMF (3 staff) and the University of Victoria (administrative assistance) as part of the Victoria Subatomic Physics and Accelerator Research Centre (VISPA). The proponents of this MRS grant request and the MRS requests by Carleton University and UBC propose to operate with the assistance of a common prioritization board. The function of the board will be to facilitate access to the MRS facilities by reviewing new requests for use of the facilities provided by the MRS funds. The board will rank these requests based on standard NSERC criteria. The MRS managers at the institutes will use this ranking to assign manpower as it becomes available as on-going tasks are completed. The Board will also be given information about the progress and status of on-going work undertaken by the MRS employees. Tentatively, the Board will include the following members: Gerald Oakham (Carleton), Dean Karlen (U Vic), Tom Mattison (UBC), Brigitte Vachon (McGill), Mark Boulay (Queens), Blair Jamieson (Winnipeg), Akira Konaka (TRIUMF), and William Trischuk (IPP). The board will meet when necessary and at least once per year by phone/video and communicate by email in order to respond to requests for access to MRS resources.
