英文摘要
Capital funding for a superconducting electron linear accelerator at TRIUMF, known as the e-linac, was approved in June 2010, through the Canada Foundation for Innovation and matching funding from the Governments of British Columbia and Canada. The accelerator will produce isotopes for nuclear and materials science research, and for medical applications. Superconducting accelerator technology is being developed in Canada through this project, which may lead to Canadian participation in future international research facilities that use this technique for particle acceleration. This application requests funds to allow graduate students to continue participation in the e-linac project, thereby receiving valuable training in accelerator physics. In the first three years of this project, our students have worked on the design, construction, and operation of beam profile monitors, a key diagnostic system for the e-linac, and in the analysis of data from these devices. A student has also helped develop high-level application software to facilitate operation of the prototype low energy beamline, and for future commissioning of the Injector Cryomodule followed by the Accelerator Cryomodule, and later to facilitate routine operations. Full deployment of the equipment and software developed by the students will commence with the installation of the e-linac in the e-hall in 2014, followed by an extended period of commissioning and operation. This period will offer an excellent opportunity for students to learn many important skills in accelerator physics.
