The high-tech field of imaging is used daily throughout society. As a key part of our economy, it provides essential information for major job sectors in Canada, such as natural resource management in the energy, forestry, and agriculture industries, as well as medical imaging, national security, climate, water, and the environment. Major growth in Canada and globally (doubled market within a decade; projected $58 billion by 2012) plus retirements has created a severe shortage of trained professionals in this field. As a recognised leader in Canada in both teaching and imaging research, the University of Lethbridge has invested heavily in this field. The AMETHYST proposal will create the first Imaging Science degree program in Canada and it addresses all four NSERC priority areas: environmental science, natural resources and energy, health, and information technology. The innovative AMETHYST Pathways Program will create training environments linked directly with internships at over 35 collaborating agencies in industry and government, as well as other selected universities, all packaged within new curriculum in undergraduate to post-graduate streams. At the core of this innovative proposal, led by experts in both imaging sciences and educational fields, are features such as practical hands-on training; professional skills development; blended and cross-disciplinary learning; local, national and international internships; interdisciplinary partnerships; and workshops on science and technology as well as career development and workforce preparation. Our commitment to excellence includes individualised programs tailored to each trainee through a one-on-one mentorship program. AMETHYST graduates will also be uniquely trained in both technical and applications domains - we expect 100 % employment for all graduates throughout the program. Defined outcomes are assured through explicit accountability and external program reviews, with scientific and community-based reporting. AMETHYST will carry out leading-edge interdisciplinary research in critical areas and produce a broader base of entry-level specialists to help address critical, longer-term needs within this substantial and growing job market.
