NSERC CREATE Graduate Specialization in Ultra-large scale Software Systems

Celebrating 40 years since accreditation, the Queen's School of Computing is internationally recognized for software research and education and is home to the NSERC RIM Industrial Research Chair in Software Engineering for Ultra Large Scale Software (ULSS) Systems. The School is part of a larger software research community in the Kingston, ON area, including strong ties with the Departments of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) at Queen's and at the Royal Military College of Canada (RMCC). The School also has a global focus on the explosive international growth in ULSS development with frequent collaborative visitors from around the world, including, among others, the Fraunhofer Institute (Germany), Fondazione Bruno Kessler (Italy) and the Software Engineering Institute (USA). The NSERC CREATE Graduate Specialization in Ultra-large-scale Software Systems (NSERC CREATE in ULSS) will be built on this expertise with the long-term goal of establishing a sustainable Canadian collaborative research and education solution for the unique challenges in the architecture and use of ULSS systems. These systems process the financial, healthcare and network connections data of millions of people worldwide. They must minimize or eliminate vulnerabilities to maintain the level of service demanded by Canada and the world. ULSS outages can bring whole economies to a halt. To address the current and foreseeable demand in both industry and academia, the NSERC CREATE in ULSS will train over 80 highly qualified personnel, including postdoctoral fellows, PhD, MSc and undergraduate students in the specialized methods and advanced design concepts of ULSS. As well, professional development skills and training transition streams relevant to ULSS will be integrated with a core graduate computer science education in ULSS. No such graduate program is currently offered in Canada or elsewhere in the world, despite the growing importance of ULSS and the demand for experts trained in the unique set of new problems that ULSS poses.
