英文摘要
Owing to the tremendous advances in RF superconductivity in recent years and to the successful operation of large scale SRF accelerator installations, superconducting RF (SRF) has become the technology of choice for modern particle accelerators.
This proposal comprises a set of interlinked and complementary projects aiming towards improving the performance of SRF cavities for future accelerators, and advancing the field of RF superconductivity. This application requests funds for undergraduate and graduate students and postdocts to participate in SRF research, thereby receiving valuable training in this active and ever-expanding field, and is accompanied by five RTIs that request funds for associated experimental equipment.
Building on recent experiments at TRIUMF's muSR facility, we propose to perform fundamental studies of RF superconductivity using magnetometry, muSR and the proposed high-field extension of the betaNMR spectrometer to obtain information on the penetration of magnetic flux near the surface of the Nb superconductor, and to explore correlations between magnetic response of Nb and rf measurements of Nb cavities. To obtain a detailed and precise picture of the rf characteristics of cavities, we will develop a temperature mapping system. Aiming to devise new, cost-effective heat treatments for cavities, we propose to develop a UHV rf induction oven for processing both samples of niobium as well as single cell 1.3GHz cavities, that will help increase the Q value of the resonator. To expand the capability of the ARIEL e-linac, students will design, construct and test a novel SRF separator cavity capable of high transverse deflecting fields and CW operation, that will enable the simultaneous operation of the e-linac for RIB delivery and for production of ERL/FEL driven radiation. In support of all activities in this programme, we will develop instrumentation, techniques and infrastructure to perform rf measurements of fundamental and higher order modes in accelerating and deflecting cavities.
