In close collaboration with engineers from Price Industries Limited, a leading manufacturer of air distribution and heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems in North America, this research project will provide a thorough understanding of the complex flow dynamics associated with turbulent jets produced from various nozzle geometries and also in chilled beams. This type of flow has diverse environmental and engineering applications, including HVAC systems, industrial waste disposal, heat transfer augmentation and thrust producing devices. In most of these applications, an efficient entrainment of the ambient flow and its mixing with the core jet is essential. In this project, we will study how various nozzle geometry and their spatial arrangements affect the induction and mixing between the ambient flow and the core jet flow. Experiments will be performed in a large-scale facility in a research lab at Price Industries and also small-scale model in a lab facility at the University of Manitoba. Velocity and pressure distributions will be measured in these experiments. The results from this project will serve as a benchmark database to facilitate the development and verification of numerical models capable of handling such complex flow conditions. Such models will be extremely beneficial to HVAC companies and other companies that intend to exploit enhanced induction and mixing between turbulent jets and ambient flow to improve the efficiency of their devices. Throughout the project, training will be provided to one PhD student, one M.Sc. student and one undergraduate student.
