Enmax Corporation is one of the largest electricity providers in Alberta. The company is in need of an asset
maintenance strategy for more than 2000 assets in a 320MW combined-cycle cogeneration power plant in
North Calgary (CEC plant). This project is an extension of the Engage project between Enmax Generation and
the University of Alberta to develop an advanced asset maintenance strategy for the cogeneration power plant.
In addition, we also aim to determine stock-holding levels for inventory items which make up a significant
portion of total CEC plant's assets, as Enmax is unsure whether the plant has adequate spare parts or they are
over-stocking parts for maintenance. The maintenance and stock holding strategies are needed to ensure
reliable and cost-effective operation of the plant. The key challenges of this project include determination of
inspection, monitoring, and intervention intervals and establishment of an inventory holding policy for critical
spares. This project aims to address these challenges by using and/or modifying the latest research results in
condition based maintenance (CBM), prognosis and health management (PHM), and multi attribute decision
making (MADM) for spare parts management.
The findings of this project will include methodologies for determining optimal intervals for inspection,
monitoring, and preventive maintenance intervention of various kinds of assets and a multi-criteria spare parts
determination for maintenance. These results will also be useful for other co-generation power plants operated
by other companies in Canada and around the world.
