英文摘要
The regulated demand toward improving the fuel efficiency of mass-market transportation vehicles has targeted the increased utilization of lightweight structural Mg alloy components. However, the intrinsic susceptibility of Mg alloys to corrosion is a significant challenge that needs to be addressed. The objective of this proposal is to demonstrate that As alloying effectively improves the intrinsic corrosion resistance of structural HPDC Mg-Al material (AM60B for example) when exposed in near-neutral aqueous saline environments. The scientific issue is to discover the fundamental nature in which As inhibits the rate of the cathode reaction (H2 evolution) across the surface of a structural Mg-Al alloy containing multi-phase microstructures with intermetallic second phases and the Mg solid solution matrix. Discovering the source is of paramount importance in defining the extent to which control of As partitioning during die-casting will be required. Such an undertaking clearly requires competencies in physical metallurgy, electrochemistry, surface modification and surface analysis
