To keep up with the gradually increasing demands for electricity and the new calls for cleaner and more
reliable electrical supply, smart grids, a new revolutionary infrastructure for power systems that encompasses
intelligence, robustness, efficiency, and self-awareness, are in great need. An important component of smart
grids is power condition monitoring system, which is envisioned to diagnose live conditions of power systems
and allow terminal nodes to effectively communicate their detected power condition information. It enables the
self-awareness of power systems. This proposal is on new methods for power condition monitoring for smart
grid applications.
The proposed project contains two parts: new detection schemes for information-bearing disturbances in power
signals and new solutions for the communications of the detection results among nodes of power networks. For
the detection part, instead of extending existing methods that use root-mean-square values, harmonics, or
instantaneous current or voltage values, we propose to use stochastic properties of the power signals. For the
communication part, we will study the potential of massive MIMO technologies for the communication tasks
of power condition monitoring systems. Successful outcomes of this project may provide significant
improvement in power condition monitoring, which can benefit the Canadian power industry and their
customers.
