During gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopy, it is critical to localize lesions for effective diagnosis and treatment. For example, it is important to document the location and extent of colorectal cancer lesions and/or inflammatory, potentially pre-neoplastic diseases (e.g. Crohns disease, ulcerative colitis). Without accurate, reproducible lesion localization, it is difficult to confirm complete lesion removal, assess treatment effect, or detect lesion recurrence during follow-up surveillance tests. On the other hand, the colon is contractile and mobile within the abdomen, localization of lesions with an endoscope is very imprecise.
We plan to develop an endoscope tracking technology combined with 3D reconstruction of colon side wall through a panoramic imaging endoscope to produce a map of the entire colonic mucosa side wall such that mucosal lesions can be referenced and located in subsequent surgical or colonoscopy procedures.
