This proposal aims to integrate optical waveguides written by a fs laser directly into the glass of mobile phones and displays. It focuses on achieving prototype devices, such as a temperature and a refractive index sensor in the toughened glass of the mobile phone to integrate photonics for the first time. It will study the strength of the glass after waveguide inscription and the integration of lasers and photodiodes directly into the mobile phone package, to connect to the waveguides, hence the name of the project Pi-phone - photonics integrated phone.
