Modular construction efficiently uses resources and has impressive sustainable credentials. Cheaper and faster
than its counterparts, it offers greater choices in building shape such as curved, triangular, and other options.
Vectorbloc Corp. is a high-end architectural fabrication company based in Toronto. The company develops
various connectors and assemblies required for HSS-based modular building construction, which is expected to
revolutionise the way building constructions are currently done. The new HSS-based modular construction will
be faster and cheaper than existing construction methods. The primary connector it uses is called VectorBloc; it
is a cast-steel connector that facilitates the efficient design and construction of volumetric modular steel
building structures. Proof of concept through full-scale laboratory-based tests is crucial for the company to
establish the connector's validity and use in HSS-based modular building construction. Hence, this project is
designed to undertake full-scale tests on two column specimens, joined by the VectorBloc connector under an
axial load. The test data will provide an understanding of the connector's structural behavior when used to
connect two axially loaded column members from two consecutive storeys of an HSS-based modular building.
The test data will also provide suggestions if further changes and/or modifications are required to ensure
structural requirements and safety when the connector is used in connecting two columns. The applicant, Dr. S.
Das, has extensive experience in researching steel, masonry, and concrete structures. Vectorbloc Corp. strongly
believes that with the active collaboration of Dr. Das, this project will lead their business on a path to success
and will promote future growth, creating new job opportunities in Ontario and Canada.
