Methods of bitumen recovery from the oil sands, including surface mining and in situ extraction, require large volumes of water and result in the production of oil sands process-affected water (OSPW) containing various organic compounds such as naphthenic acids (NAs). NAs not only interfere with bitumen recovery and damage the bitumen extraction facilities, but are also of concern for environmental protection. Therefore, the degradation and elimination of NAs is vital for further water reuse in bitumen recovery processes and for safe release to the environment. The NAIT Applied Research Centre for Oil Sands Sustainability (NARCOSS) and BioLargo Water, Inc. will evaluate the application of a new Advanced Oxidation System (AOS) technology for degradation of model NA, which will be validated by using UHPLC-QTOF instrumentation. BioLargo Water's AOS technology has been successfully applied to the disinfection of water, and is expected to efficiently oxidize and remove NA compound. This research elevates the sustainability of oil sands operators in terms of water management and benefits Canadian society, water resources, and the environment.
