The focus is on a dynamic database schema and the corresponding User Interface (UI) design for innovative
mobile apps that are developed by the partner company. Dynamic database schema refers to the concept of a
flexible database modelling wherein the table structure can easily be extended or altered by its users even after
the application is released for production. AirSenze Solutions Inc. (partnering company) has pioneered the
development of mobile applications to increase efficiency and accountability in bylaw compliance at provincial
and municipality levels. These mobile applications enrich the conventional site inspection processes that
include standard paper-based checklists by adding innovative mobile-based functionalities like GPS tracking,
multimedia attachments, cloud-based data storage, and digital time-stamped signatures. However, minor
alterations in the inspection checklist requires a redesign of the entire database schema and user interface. A
dynamic database design that self-adapts to minor changes in the input parameters will greatly reduce the
development cost and application timeline for the company. This will help AirSenze to effectively cater to the
technological demands of its growing customer base. Estimates indicate that the software development timeline
will be reduced by more than 1/3 as a result of this project. Dynamic database design is a relatively new
concept and many questions remain to be answered. A comprehensive analysis of multiple DB modelling
approaches will be conducted to explore various capabilities and challenges associated the design problem.
This research project will result in a significant increase in app design efficiency and revenue for the company.
Currently a majority of government inspection are carried out by using archaic paper-based forms. This is an
expensive and inefficient process which can be greatly improved and streamlined through the use of mobile
apps. An adaptable database design will help the company cater to multiple government sectors by developing
cost-effective software solutions in a timely manner.
