项目摘要

This project's industry collaborator is Domtar Inc., located in Montréal, Québec. Domtar is a multi-national company over 100 years old; it has many pulp and paper manufacturing and processing plants across Canada and the USA. Some of the products manufactured from soft and hard woods are various cellulous pulp fibres. Domtar intends to establish new applications for these fibres so the fibre market will increase; this will ensure that pulp fibre production is viable and sustainable. This research will investigate the uses and applications of Domtar's pulp and modified fibres in concrete mixes; their fibres will be used to develop a new concrete product called pulp fibre reinforced concrete. It will have better strength and durability than current plain concrete. Thus, the project is designed to increase the marketability of Domtar's various pulp and modified fibres. This will give Domtar an advantage over its competitors that produce various composite fibres like carbon, glass, and basalt fibres. The applicant Dr. Das is experienced in researching fibre mixed concrete materials and their applications to bridges and to concrete pavements. He has been working with basalt fibre mixed concrete for five years. Domtar Inc. strongly believes that with the active collaboration of Dr. Das, this project will lead the business on a path to success while promoting future growth and creating new job opportunities throughout Ontario and Canada.
