One of the most selling features of electric vehicles (EV) is their power train working efficiency and/or its energy consumption. There is relentless effort in the market to improve on both aspects. The role of power electronics is vital to guarantee efficient operation in motoring/cruising/braking modes of the EV operation within any drive cycle. In-Motive engineering is focused on the development of not only a cost effective power train but also an efficient and energy conservative one. The UOIT expertise will complement and support In-Motive's to achieve this goal. The project will involve the modeling and simulation of the In-Motive power train with different inverter/motor/transmission system control scenarios. The project will detail the pros and cons of using vector control, direct torque control, and the novel self-sustained control to manage the operation of the EV power train; one at a time. This comparison will highlight the different controllers working features; for example, space envelope of the implemented control system, working efficiency, level of energy consumption, safety, reliability, availability, and maintainability of the system.
