Proof-of-concept tests of novel cooling technologies for use in overclocked, high-frequency computing systems

The work proposed herein involves proof-of-concept tests of potential novel thermal solutions that substantially increase the heat transfer from processors to enable the design of ultra-high-frequency computing servers for the financial industry. The industrial partner's clients involved in high-frequency trading have expressed a need for servers with substantially increased processor speeds to execute trades as rapidly as possible. By way of the present NSERC Engage grant application, the partnership will initiate a research program to investigate innovative cooling technologies that are not incremental modifications to existing ones, but entirely new, better performing ones to enable overclocking of the processors, thus accelerating them beyond their rated speeds. The majority of the work involves the design and proposal of novel cooling approaches, and the aim will be to propose three potentially viable novel cooling solutions. Experimental proof-of-concept tests will then be performed to estimate their feasibility as thermal management solutions for computing systems. Successful results could ultimately serve as the basis for future research projects in which prototypes would be designed, built, implemented and fully tested within actual servers.
