项目摘要
Light aerospace frames are machined from solid aluminum blocks. Aluminum is milled at very high speeds due
to its low strength and thermal resistance. The productivity of machining aluminum is the chatter vibrations
caused by flexible tool/machine tool spindles or thin walls of the parts. Slender end mills experiences severe
chatter, which leads to scrapping costly aerospace parts or damage the high performance machine tools. This
project aims to reduce the machining time of aluminum parts while meeting tolerance requirements. UBC will
validate its science based part quality prediction algorithms by considering the flexible sections of the
machined parts. Chatter free cutting conditions will be identified by selecting the most suitable cutter geometry,
and virtually simulate the process forces and vibrations for optimal milling of thin walled, flexible aerospace
parts. The fundamental research algorithms are currently studied at the University of British Columbia's
(UBC) Manufacturing Automation Laboratory (MAL) under NSERC - Pratt & Whitney Canada Industrial
Research Chair. The long term goal is to bring AVCORP to NSERC sponsored fundamental but collaborative
research projects. It is understood that this project will not have any time where F-35 data is made available to
members of the team that are not in compliance with ITAR requirements.
