RTDS Technologies, Winnipeg is one of the leading organizations in the world developing real time digital
power systems simulators. It offers detailed electromagnetic simulation modeling platform for testing
protection systems, which is a core expertise area of the principal investigator. The company has a major R&D
arm. The company has expressed keen interest in collaborating with Prof. Rama Gokaraju (University of
Saskatchewan) and supporting a NSERC Engage grant proposal to develop and test a high speed digital
protection system for extra voltage transmission systems. The research and development for this project would
involve designing sub cycle Fourier transform method (using "phaselets") on latest digital hardware (field
programmable gate array boards -- FPGAs), which are available in the computer industry. A state-of-the-art
testing method used in the electric power industry would be adopted for testing the relaying functions. The
hardware-in-the-loop testing platform would consist of the RTDS simulator with substation standard
communication protocols -- "IEC 61850" (available at the University of Saskatchewan) and Xilinx ML-605
FPGA board. The testing platform would be used for evaluating the performance of the new digital relay
similar to what is done in the industry. The findings of the testing would be useful for RTDS Technologies to
demonstrate new relay testing methods to the developers, protection equipment manufacturers and the electric
utilities. The results would published as an IEEE paper. The proposed research will provide a unique
opportunity to the students to do both research and testing using the latest simulation and digital technologies
available in the power industry.
