Electranix - the Winnipeg based developers of the ETRAN package - is a power systems studies and consulting firm dedicated to providing high-quality specialty engineering studies and services. It is interested in collaborating with Dr. Rama Gokaraju (University of Saskatchewan) for developing analytical tools to assess the compatibility of Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) and Renewable Energy Systems (RES) in off-grid and weakly connected remote load centers. While the models for conventional nuclear power plants are available in PSS/E and other power system simulators, the evolving design limits of SMRs and fast acting converter-based generation from RES must be represented by appropriately adapted models. Under the proposed project, new models will be developed for the evolving design limits of SMRs and the fast acting converter-based generation from RES. The said models will then be used to develop the analytical tools for compatibility assessment of the disparate generation technologies including the need and potential role of electrical energy storage to improve the RES hosting capacity of remote load centers with SMRs. The models, methodology and the findings of a case study on an actual feeder in Saskatchewan will help assess the potential of developing carbon-neutral sustainable energy systems with the combination of SMRs, RES and storage in remote communities.
