Roughly 6.48 million liters of hydrocarbon liquids have leaked onto soil and water between 1990 and 2012 in Alberta alone. Treatment of hydrocarbon contaminants in soil using oxidizing chemicals often fall short at high and low temperatures leading to secondary pollution of the soil. Hanalta Industries Ltd. and the University of Calgary have formed a research collaboration to investigate and develop cost-effective and energy-efficient techniques to treat hydrocarbon contaminants in soil and water using Electromagnetic heating.
A novel electromagnetic open probe test setup will be developed to measure Electromagnetic field propagation and transduction into heat within different mixtures of hydrocarbon-contaminated soil and water as a function of frequency and environmental conditions.
Optimal frequency bands for Electric and Magnetic fields used to heat of hydrocarbon-contaminated soil and water will be determined, and a wireless transmitter test system to irradiate and desorb hydrocarbon contaminants from contaminated soil and water samples will be developed at those optimal frequencies.
