How cell type diversity is generated from multipotent stem cells remains to be uncovered. The advent of mass spectrometry allows for an unprecedented analysis of protein interaction networks. Of all coding genes in the human genome, 5-10% encode gene regulatory proteins. This is 10 times higher compared to yeasts that are unicellular eukaryotes, indicating that transcription regulation is important for cell type diversification in multicellular organisms.
