The responsible exploitation and management of Canada's marine resources depends on adequately understanding the dynamic seabed environment. Modern seafloor processes such as sand dune migration, landslides and turbidity currents, gas and fluid venting, iceberg and ice-keel scouring are all present in Canadian waters and act to continuously modify the seabed. Offshore oil and gas development; the installation and maintenance of tidal, wind and wave power generation; and the maintenance of ports and harbours, all require an understanding of these potentially hazardous processes. To understand them, we have to be able to adequately resolve and monitor them.
