Weather and climate predictions lack fundamental information to link nanoscale aerosols, which are suspended liquids or solids, to precipitation processes that would allow models to better predict rain and snowfall at local and global scales. Models for weather and climate need to incorporate microphysical and chemical details about the atmosphere, and characteristics of aerosols, that influence the initiation of precipitation. This proposal aims to bridge a gap in our knowledge of processes governing precipitation by identifying characteristics of aerosols responsible for initiating and sustaining rain and snowfall.
