Proper design and reinforcing for punching shear of flat concrete slabs is essential for safety and robustness of structures because punching shear failures are brittle and catastrophic. Typically punching shear has been investigated for flat slab on columns where the transition between one-way beam shear and two-way punching shear is clearly defined. However, when the slab is supported on a long wall, the end of the wall is also subject to two-way shear creating punching shear issue. Punching shear at the ends of long walls is not specifically addressed in the codes of practice. Blackwell Structural Engineers routinely encounter these types of connections and the lack of clear guidelines results in a time-consuming design process. Uncertainty in the accuracy of analysis results could also potentially result in unsafe structures since no rational and comprehensive research on the topic has been done.
