Multiscale approach to modern materials and structures

The proposed research addresses analyses and design of structures made from a new generation of construction materials, in particular modern concretes and polymers. Safety and robustness of structures depend on our understanding of their behaviour, which is directly influenced by the materials used in their construction. Structural concrete research will concentrate on reinforced concrete flat slabs supported on columns and their application in building structures. Such flat slab structures, if not reinforced for shear, can fail in a brittle and dangerous punching shear mode. The work will include numerical and theoretical model developments, nonlinear finite element analyses , parametric studies on the effects of moment and reinforcements on punching shear capacity, development of new reinforcement techniques, studies on progressive collapse and structural robustness in seismic zones and under abnormal loadings, studies on corrosion protection and the development of new design guidelines for slabs.
