Armourgel is the brand name for a family of co-polymers, mixed from a bank of nine and injection moulded into multiple geometries. These novel dilatant materials are soft and flexible at rest and stiffen upon impact to absorb energy. The material is self-healing and can absorb and recover from multiple impacts and large overloads without being damaged, which makes it suitable for applications that are likely to be subjected to multiple impacts. In addition, unlike conventional shear thickening fluids, Armourgel relies upon a chemical reaction for its stiffening effect, the speed of which makes it suitable for ballistic and blast applications.
