Alfalfa weevil has become the most challenging pest for Alberta's alfalfa seed producers. Alfalfa weevil larvae defoliate plants and their feeding reduces yield, quality, and stand health. A density of one larva in thirty twelve-inch-tall plants has been estimated to reduce yield by about 3 lb per acre and one larva in thirty sixteen-inch-tall plants translates to a loss of approximately 0.75 lb per acre. Farmers report limited efficacy from conventional insecticide products and suspect resistance has developed. Leaf-cutter bees are an integral part of alfalfa seed production, so control options must regard pollinator safety.
