This project will allow the livestock industry to reap the benefits of the scientific research involving residual feed intake (RFI). The purebred industry, where the foundation genetics are found, has not been taking advantage of identifying low RFI animals due to the lack of knowledge and high cost associated with RFI. Olds College and the University of Alberta are partnering with the Canadian Hereford Association to characterize RFI in purebred Hereford bulls; produce a RFI expected progeny difference (EPD) using both phenotypic and molecular information, and use genotypes to assist in the validation of an existing RFI single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) panel produced by Livestock Gentec. This will involve RFI measurement on 900 bulls using the GrowsafeTM technology over a three year period. Identifying low RFI breeding stock has the potential to cut feeding costs, the number one non-capital cost faced by cattle producers. This project will provide the means of identifying more efficient sires, which will then sire more efficient progeny, not just in the Hereford breed, but across a large section of the commercial industry as well, improving the profit margin and competitiveness for many Canadian beef cattle producers. By identifying more efficient breeding stock, the entire cattle industry will also benefit from a reduced environmental footprint due to the reduced methane and manure output of more efficient cattle. Improved characterization of RFI and the production of a RFI EPD will increase the competitiveness of the Canadian purebred and commercial industries through reduced feed costs to the primary producers.
