Automatic vehicle location (AVL)/ Automatic Vehicle Identification (AVI) is a means for automatically determining and transmitting the geographic location of a vehicle as well as identifying particular vehicle "identity" such as its license plate, make, model and potentially human driver, all for the purposes of accounting of related commercial activity. Presently AVI/AVL systems based on GPS and Dedicated Short Range Communication (DSRC) technologies are deployed in a variety of settings such as airport ground transportation areas (arrivals/departure terminals). In such settings, AVI/AVL is used for commercial activity vehicle tracking, dispatching and billing such as to avoid curbside congestion, improve safety and decrease passenger wait times for taxi, limo or shuttle bus service.
