Replacement of parts with complex shape and thin walls can be costly. In some cases the parts can be refurbished by using thermal spray coating processes to deposit a proper coating on the worn areas to restore dimensions without affecting the functionality and original geometry of the part. Often the surface restored by thermal spray offers better performance in service due to the specifics of the coating microstructure. We will investigate the development of coating techniques for restoration of a number of common parts from the Aeropol Aviation Services Corporation inventory. In particular we are going to select a proper coating material and deposition method for a valve body made out of aluminum alloy, and test the performance of the restored parts.
