Lighting accounts for approximately 20% of global building electricity consumption and about 11% of the electricity usage in an average Canadian home. The deployment of high-efficiency alternating current (AC)-based light-emitting diode (LED) lighting in newly constructed homes has recently gained traction, enabling a reduction in residential energy consumption in comparison to homes utilizing traditional AC-based incandescent lighting. However, LED lighting technology is inherently direct current (DC) powered. Existing AC-based LED devices convert the incoming AC power to low-voltage DC power, which incurs electrical losses and also leads to increased complexity and reduced reliability of the overall lighting system.
