Optical Vector Analyzer for Integrated Microwave Photonics Research

The proposed RTI grant will support the purchase of a new Optical Vector Analyzer (OVA) to enable the continuation of our research activities that have been supported by an old Optical Vector Analyzer failed recently. Specifically, three NSERC research programs will be supported: 1) NSERC Discovery grant program (2012-2017) in which integrated microwave photonic signal processors for wideband microwave signal processing are being developed, 2) NSERC CREATE program to support graduate student training in Silicon Electronic-Photonic Integrated Circuits (2012-2018), and 3) NSERC Strategic project grant program (two grants, 2013-2017 and 2016-2019) in which integrated microwave photonics circuits for ultra-fast signal processing and for 5G communications are being studied and developed. An OVA is a key instrument to perform high resolution spectrum measurements, which is essential and extremely important for optical component test and characterization. Our old OVA purchased eight years ago has failed recently and it could not be repaired since the model is obsolete and discontinued. We hereby request for funding to purchase a new OVA to enable us to continue our research activities in integrated microwave photonics, where high-resolution optical spectrum measurements and analysis are highly needed.
