The work covered by this proposal builds on an existing collaboration between the Royal Military College of Canada and StandardAero of Winnipeg, MB. It seeks to take advantage of, and extend their engineering research and instrumentation developments for the Rolls Royce, Allison Model-250 turboshaft engine. This very popular workhorse has 15 variants over decades of use around the world. Its robust design makes it a good candidate for performance monitoring, and engineering innovation potential to its long-standing programmes of repair, maintenance and overhaul (MRO). Some characteristics of normal operation as well as deleterious impacts of operational use, and approved repair techniques have been identified. The focus of the work proposed is on the hot section. Specifically, there is a need to explore unsteadiness in the combustion system and to investigate unsatisfactory pattern factors and uneven turbine nozzle deterioration. Technologydeveloped for the evaluation of repair schemes and custom-designed instrumentation developments are in place to capitalize on the research to date. It is a multi-phase, parallel suite of complimentary activities intended to enhance the ability of StandardAero, as a major global MRO organization, to offer value-added engineering services to their clients and to deliver a high quality stream of graduate students to the project and eventually to the gas turbine industry in Canada.
