The primary objective of this collaborative research project is to develop an industrial strength framework for the aerodynamic design optimization of Advanced Aerodynamic Systems. The initiative builds on past and current successful partnerships between the McGill University Computational Aerodynamics Group lead by Professor Nadarajah and the Advanced Aerodynamics Group at Bombardier Aerospace (BA). These partnerships have developed advanced numerical techniques from flow solver technology and detached eddy simulation to an aerodynamic design optimization (ADO) numerical environment. The objective here is to extend the numerical framework to design the next-generation of two advanced aerodynamic sub-systems: advanced winglet and high-lift systems. The research objectives will be met through the advancement of BA's two numerical tools; first, FANSC-Adjoint, a multi-block structured second-order finite-volume flow and adjoint solver for the analysis and design in viscous transonic flows; second, DRAGON, a new hybrid unstructured-structured second-order finite-volume code for simulating flows over high-lift configurations. The task presented in this proposal will develop the necessary novel algorithms through four objectives. The academic research team will introduce novel contributions towards stabilization techniques for the adjoint equations, optimization algorithms for stiff optimization problems, and anisotropic grid-adaptation through an optimal approach. Graduate students will gain practical aircraft design experience by working with BA. The impact of the research will enable Canada to remain a leader in current aircraft technology and to gain an economic advantage in the aerospace industry.
